Performing At
Eric Oberthaler [eO] is a Sebastopol-based composer, sound weaver, and creative catalyst known for conjuring immersive sonic worlds that melt the boundaries between nature and imagination. Trained in classical composition at Oberlin Conservatory and CalArts, eO has since evolved into a genre-fluid performer whose work bridges acoustic instruments, electronic textures, and immersive, cinematic production.
For this trail performance, eO brings lush, atmospheric keyboard soundbeds layered with trumpet and winds — offering hikers a moment of wonder, spaciousness, and connection as they wander through the landscape. His music invites listeners to slow down, tune in, and become part of the unfolding story of the place.
Whether at the TED Conference, under the stars at Red Rocks, or deep in the dreamscape of the Burning Man Opera, eO’s performances transform space into story, and sound into ceremony. His creative path has included collaborations with genre-blending ensembles like Gamelan X, Brass Menažeri, Stellamara, and ArcheDream for Humankind, as well as award-winning compositions (8Dio, Bob Moog Foundation) and ongoing tours with the electronic/blues-folk band Dirtwire — all rooted in a passion for presence, play, and transformation through sound.
Beyond music, eO creates intimate rock portraits using a microscope to reveal the hidden beauty of ocean and river pebbles — a practice that mirrors his sonic work: noticing the overlooked, and drawing listeners and viewers into deeper connection with the world around them.
